Roundness / Rondeur

Roundness

ROUNDNESS was coordinated through an ARTA open-call on Facebook in the spring of 2020 inviting artists to explore the concept of ‘roundness’ in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the dreadful early days of the pandemic, when so much seemed on a precipice, artists were eager to look to their art for nourishment, understanding, and as a way of considering the future while being mindful of the gravity of the present. Twenty-four artists responded to the call, most from Manitoba and several from Ontario, Japan, and the US. Each produced one work. In the summer of 2020, with the support of a Manitoba Arts Council ‘Connecting at a Distance’ grant, ROUNDNESS emerged as an on-line YUMPU exhibition. The YUMPU exhibition, which includes images, bios, and thoughtful statements about the work, has received close to 2400 visits to date. In this 2021 La Maison gallery exhibition, three of the US artists and two from Winnipeg from the 2020 project were not able to participate. ARTA, which is a project-based, informal collective started in 2017 in Winnipeg. Previous projects were Bookmark 2017 and Illumination 2018 in which fifteen artists made enough iterations of their pieces for an exchange, and presented and discussed their work at a ‘salon’. Space/Espace, 2019 was a curated, six-artist exhibition installed at La Maison and at Wasagaming Community Arts Gallery, Riding Mountain National Park. Future projects will develop.
